The Montessori Model for Success

An article recently published by INC. discusses how social and emotional skills developed at a young age foster success in later life. The article focuses on a study published in 2015 by the American Journal of Public Health. The study finds that developing social and emotional skills before kindergarten may be more important than focusing on developing academic skills at that age.

The article states, “researchers discovered that the skills that predict future success had nothing to do with reading or writing. Instead, they say your child’s social and emotional skills are what determine how likely your child is to go to college…”

The Montessori Method Teaches Social and Emotional Skills

Montessori pre-school classrooms focus heavily on social and emotional development, by:

  • Modeling polite behavior
  • Labeling and validating children’s feelings
  • Teaching children all about different emotional expressions
  • Teaching children to be members of the classroom community

This social and emotional curriculum sets up Montessori students for long-term progress.

Social and Emotional Development at Home and School

Parents and guardians play a crucial role in helping develop their child’s social and emotional skills through setting positive examples and actively discussing emotions with their child. A Montessori classroom expands on the lessons from home by providing social and emotional education, paired with social interaction with other children.
